Geneva Motor Show 2012: R-Line for Beetle & Passat

R-line offers benefits in dynamic styling:
Beetle and Passat added to R-line programme

Beetle: R-line packs specially tailored to ‘Sport’ version
Passat: Bestseller offered as independent R-line model

Wolfsburg / Geneva, 06 March 2012 - Volkswagen R GmbH has developed the R-line for all car drivers who want especially dynamic body styling and interior design in the spirit of the power-enhanced R models. The latest models to sport R-line features are the Beetle, the Passat and the Passat Estate. That is why Volkswagen has brought two vehicles to Lac Léman for world premieres: a Beetle Sport with R-line exterior and interior packs and a Passat Estate R-Line – which will be offered as an independent equipment line in the future.

Beetle with R-line packs
Beetle R-line exterior. Starting this autumn, Volkswagen will be offering R-line packs for the Beetle based on the top ‘Sport’ version (currently offered: 1.4 TSI with 118 kW / 160 PS and 2.0 TSI with 147 kW / 200 PS). There is an exterior pack and an interior pack. The exterior pack may be ordered separately, while the interior pack may only be ordered as an extension of exterior R-line features. Volkswagen R GmbH, which is responsible for developing R-line features, has made its bumper designs independent and very sporty – the front bumper has grained black surfaces, air inlets and direction indicator frames in chrome; the rear bumper sports a diffuser. Other R-line exterior features are side panelling and door mirrors in body colour, R-line logos in front on the side panels (beneath the A-pillars) and 18-inch ‘Twister’ alloy wheels (tyres: 235/45). 19-inch alloy wheels (‘Tornado’ type) with 235/40 tyres are also available as an option. The R-line exterior pack may be combined with any of the twelve Beetle colours.

Beetle R-line interior. Traditionally, an R-line pack includes a sport seat system; in the Beetle, these sport seats include fabric upholstery of the seating surfaces in ‘Kyalami’ design. The inner surfaces of the side seat supports are designed in ‘San Remo’ microfibre, while decorative seams in ‘Art Grey’ upgrade the borders. As a special option, the seats may be ordered in black leather (‘Vienna’ or ‘Nappa’); in this case, each of the front head restraints is upgraded with an embossed R-line logo. This logo also decorates the custom door sill plates offered in the R-line pack and the leather-trimmed sport steering wheel. Like the steering wheel, the gearshift lever surround and parking brake grip are customised with decorative seams in ‘Art Grey’. They are colour-coordinated with the decorative inlays in ‘Dark Vanadium’.

Passat with R-line features
Passat R-line. Volkswagen will be offering the new Passat R-Line and Passat Estate R-Line as completely independent equipment versions. As exceptionally sporty Passat cars, the R-line versions are positioned between the mid-level ‘Comfortline’ and the top ‘Highline’ versions.

Exterior. At the front and rear, the new bumpers in R-design create sporty accents. In front, the eye is drawn to the especially large cooling air inlet and integrated fog lights; at the rear, it is the diffuser styled in black which dominates. Just as dynamic in appearance is the harmoniously integrated rear spoiler (saloon) or roof edge spoiler (Estate). Side sills in R-line design give added presence to the car’s side profile. Fitting into this picture are 17-inch ‘Mallory’ alloy wheels (optional 18-inch) with size 235 mobility (run flat) tyres. Integrated in the radiator grille is an R-line logo. The Estate is also equipped with anodised silver roof rails. Last but not least, the dynamically tuned Passat has a dynamically tuned sport chassis with a 15 mm lower ride height (exception: vehicles with dynamic chassis control or DCC).

Interior. The sport seats are upholstered with ‘Kyalami’ fabric (seating surfaces and head restraints) and ‘San Remo’ microfibre (inner surfaces of the side seat supports). Decorative inlays in ‘Titan Silver’ on the dashboard, door trim panels and centre console give the interior a sporty boost as do the leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel (with R-line logo) and colour decorative seams. Stainless steel pedals and door sill plates (also with R-line logo) complete the interior features. Upon request (no extra charge), the roofliner may be ordered in Titan Black. Leather upholstery (‘Nappa’) is available as an option; in this case too, the front head restraints are upgraded with R-line logos.

R-line design pack for all Passat cars. Buyers of a Passat or Passat Estate Trendline (base versions), or a Comfortline or Highline, will in the future be able to customise their car with R-line detailing. This is done with an R-line design pack. It includes bumpers and side sills in R-line design, a black painted diffuser at the rear, the rear spoiler or roof edge spoiler and an R-line logo on the radiator grille.
