Heeding popular demand, Volkswagen Australia has announced at today's media launch of the Golf 7.5 Performance Range the most affordable ever incarnations of the GTI and R.
The Golf GTI Original and the Golf R Grid Edition will go on sale early in 2018 and later this year respectively.
The Golf R Grid Edition is a lean and mean version of the Golf R 7.5, one that sits comfortably beneath the newly released R hatch and Wagon and the R Wolfsburg versions that go on sale next month. Despite being the first R models to be priced below $50,000, the Grid Edition features the "normal" R's 213kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo four, six speed manual or seven-speed wet clutch DSG transmission and fifth generation 4MOTION all-wheel-drive.
Evoking the model's unique and hallowed heritage, the GTI Original is designed to repond to the clamour of fans who have long demanded a "pure" three door GTI.
Though it will come in at the most affordable ever price for a GTI, this retro-inspired, but wholly contempoarary, GTI will share the 7.5's 169kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo four, and choce of six speed manual or six speed DSG transmissions.
With the launch of these two new special models, Volkswagen has an unequalled compact performance range for all tastes, from GTI Original to the Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition.
There is a performance Golf for everyone.
Full pricing and specification will be released in the coming weeks.
