Volkswagen of Brazil - the largest vehicle manufacturer in the country - reached yesterday morning (10/5) the milestone of 20 million vehicles produced over nearly six decades of activity (since 1953). The record is represented by a red SaveiroCross, manufactured in Anchieta, São Bernardo do Campo. The celebration was attended by the member of the board of Volkswagen Group, responsible for Sales and Marketing, Christian Klingler, the chairman of Volkswagen Brazil, Thomas Schmall.
"In these nearly six decades in Brazil and 20 million vehicles, we are proud to achieve an unprecedented market, reinforcing our commitment to the country and with our customers. The successful partnership between Brazil and Volkswagen made us innovative development and production of vehicles that meet the expectations of consumers, increasingly demanding, "says the president of Volkswagen Brazil, Thomas Schmall.
The vehicles produced in Brazil also have strong presence abroad. Exports of Volkswagen of Brazil began in 1970. Since then, about 3 million units have been exported, making the current brand leader in the export sector in Brazil, with its main market is Latin America.
The Gol in 2011 celebrated a major achievement for the national industry, reached the milestone of 1 million units exported, reinforcing itself as the vehicle manufactured in the country selling abroad. In its history of success in foreign markets, the Gol has been marketed in 66 countries, and the main markets of the model, currently, are Mexico and Argentina.
The history of Volkswagen in Brazil began in March 23, 1953, in a warehouse in the Street of the Manifesto, in the Ipiranga neighborhood in Sao Paulo. From there came the first Beetles, assembled with parts imported from Germany and only 12 employees. From 1953 to 1957, were mounted in shed 2,820 vehicles (Sedan 2268 Volkswagen Kombi 1.200cc and 552).
But the pieces with national production began in September 2, 1957, when he left the assembly line plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo (SP) model marks the first made entirely in the national territory: the van, with 50% of their parts and components produced in the country
The first Beetle (Sedan) assembled in Brazil was launched on January 3, 1959. That same year, sold 8,406 units of the model that quickly became a huge success in the market, in an age dominated by imported large cars. Until 1986, Brazil produced 3.1 million units of the legendary Beetle.
The official inauguration of the factory would only happen on November 18, 1959, when circulated - aboard a Volkswagen Beetle convertible - the then president, Juscelino Kubistcheck. He was accompanied by the Governor of Sao Paulo Carvalho Pinto, and the presidents of Volkswagen of Germany, Heinrich Nordhoff, and Brazil, Friedrich Schultz-Wenk. The image of four within the Volkswagen Beetle convertible has become one of the most striking pictures in the history of the automaker.
