Happy Australia Day from VWNEWSBLOG - presenting the Country Buggy

Happy Australia Day from VWNEWSBLOG

What VWNEWSBLOG readers may not realise, is that during the 1950s-1970s Volkswagen had a very large piece of the pie in the Australian market. This included local production in a facility in Clayton, Victoria which produced Beetle's, Kombi's Type 3's, Golf's and Passat's.

One less unknown Australian Volkswagen is the Country Buggy which is the predecessor to the Thing, Trekker, 181 & 182 family. This was designed and engineered in Australia for the Australasian market, much to Volkswagen AG's horror.

Unfortunately it was ahead of what the market wanted and didn't last long in production with a very slow sales take up compared to the Type 1 aka Beetle.

You could say it was successful in sense as it lays a history for Volkswagen and their new SUV offensive.
