The most expected news on the market now arrives at Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus dealers. The VW e-Delivery, a light urban truck fully powered by electric energy, is now offered with an unprecedented consultancy service and services that form a complete electric mobility ecosystem. One hundred percent developed, tested and manufactured in Brazil, intelligent and safe, the e-Delivery models with 11 and 14 tons of gross vehicle weight are the result of R$ 150 million in investments, the equivalent of more than 400 thousand kilometers of tests and the full dedication of a team formed by 150 Brazilian engineers and technicians.

Complementing the offer of transport solutions with zero emissions, the unprecedented e-Consórcio comes into action. A partnership with some of the largest electromobility companies in the world, ensuring convenience and efficiency for the e-Delivery customer: from assembly to charging infrastructure and vehicle battery lifecycle management, integrating the entire supply chain. For the first time in Brazil, an electric truck is offered in a complete transport solution, with clear gains for the consumer.

"And the market already corresponds to so much innovation. In addition to the agreement already signed with Ambev, we have just closed the first deals with other large companies. Coca-Cola FEMSA Brasil and JBS are the first to acquire the Volkswagen electric models during the commercial launch," reinforces Cortes.

The VW e-Delivery 11 and 14 ton launches have on board state-of-the-art technology with the most refined intelligence systems. And they also come to stores with exclusive commercial consultancy, new Volks|Total e-Prev and e-Prime maintenance plans, in addition to a Volks|Care service and after-sales structure, specially designed to ensure vehicle availability and reduce its operational cost.

Inside the e-Delivery 11 tons 4x2

The lightest model in Volkswagen's electric family is equipped with an engine that delivers 300kW with a maximum torque of 2,150 Nm from zero rotation. Equipped with standard pneumatic suspension, it meets the most varied urban applications and has six battery modules and, optionally, three modules, according to the autonomy required for the operation. It has a gross vehicle weight of 10,700 kg and its maximum payload capacity, added to the body, reaches 6,320 kg.

This model will also surprise the market. With meticulous calibration for severe operation, its engine also delivers 300kW and 2,150Nm torque from the first revolutions. Its pneumatic suspension allows you to suspend one of the axles to generate even more economy in the operation. It is also very versatile in its applications and can receive six or three battery modules depending on the customer's wishes. It has a gross vehicle weight of 14,300 kg and its maximum payload capacity, added to the body, reaches 9,055 kg, the largest in its category in electrics in Brazil.

Partnership in business and development with Ambev

Developed, tested and manufactured in Brazil, the e-Delivery caught the world's attention in 2017, when it was presented during the Innovation Day, an event on innovative technologies promoted by the TRATON Group in Hamburg, Germany. And it was also world news in 2018, when Ambev, a company belonging to the AB InBev group, announced its intention to purchase 1,600 VW electric trucks. More recently, it placed its first firm order, for 100 units, whose delivery began last June.

It was also with Ambev that VWCO began an intense test program both in real use situations in the city of São Paulo (SP) and on runways and roads in Resende (RJ), where the automaker has its global research and development center. These tests, combined with intensive training, ensured a responsible launch, within the strict disciplines of the Volkswagen and TRATON Groups.

With this test cycle with Ambev alone, there were more than 45 thousand kilometers traveled, not emitting more than 34 tons of CO2 and not consuming more than 10,000 liters of diesel, besides proving the reliability in operation.

A milestone in Brazilian and international engineering, the launch of the first electric truck 100% developed in Brazil hits the market with a long history of large numbers. It involves the expertise of more than 150 Brazilian professionals dedicated to the project, over four years of development, with an investment of over R$ 150 million to make the first 100% electric truck produced in Brazil feasible.

e-Delivery faced more than 100 different types of tests for a safe and responsible launch, facing severe tests on special tracks, in addition to immersion simulating flooded areas. In this journey, which ranged from extreme temperatures of -20°C to +55°C to electromagnetic interference assessments, he covered the equivalent of about 400,000 kilometers to prove the vehicle's efficiency and reliability in all types of conditions.

Behind all this research and development is the largest fleet of electrical prototypes for tests in progress in Brazil, running in three shifts a day, seven days a week, and with a team of about 50 professionals directly involved in the tests for its execution, data acquisition and evaluation of results.

Tests inside and outside the factory

To enrich the result, the e-Delivery trucks traveled routes in the city of São Paulo, and in the region of the plant in Sul Fluminense, with real traffic conditions. In addition, all the work was accelerated with field simulations at VWCO's global e-Mobility center, located at the factory in Resende (RJ).

In climate chambers, with dynamometers and in real tests in different regions and countries, the e-Delivery faced from -20°C to +55°C to ensure operation in extreme temperatures. The entire refrigeration and heating system for the batteries, as well as the component cooling and air conditioning system, were put to the test.

Due to its electronic architecture superior to that of a diesel-powered vehicle, the VW electric truck was subjected to a specific analysis to ensure that there was no electromagnetic interference in the model's electronics.

Unprecedented tests for this type of vehicle, such as the test passing through flooded areas, reinforced and confirmed all the robustness of the solution designed by Resende engineering, confirming its risk-free operation under these conditions as well.

In addition, numerous new safety and specific tests for the vehicle's high voltage systems have been developed following the strictest international standards. The VWCO electric has undergone traditional development, durability and performance tests, just like any new model from the brand. All the work was done to ensure the launch with the responsibility that always governs the performance of VW Caminhões e Ônibus.

What is an electric truck made of? Certainly a lot of embedded technology. In driving, the purpose of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus is to provide an experience very close to the diesel version of the Delivery family, recognized as one of the favorites in the market. However, in operation, the components act quite differently.

There are several intelligent systems behind the operation that exchange information with each other almost instantly. The activity of these components begins as soon as the driver starts the vehicle and the command arrives at the control center, which interprets the message that it is necessary to activate the high-voltage battery for the e-Delivery to start running.

This data is shared with the battery management system, which acts as a guardian and controls your operating pace. From there, the energy goes to the distribution unit, which shares it with all other high voltage components, such as the electric motor traction inverter, which is responsible for controlling the vehicle's power and torque.

When the engine starts working, its power in the e-Delivery goes directly to the cardan, which distributes it to the truck's traction axle, without using a transmission. From that moment on, it's like any other truck: the e-Delivery wheels start to turn and the electric vehicle starts its operation. It seems like a long way, but everything happens immediately and with a lot of intelligence for maximum efficiency.

Patented engineering

The entire e-Delivery project was built around batteries, in modules, in a truly flexible architecture. This design conceived by the brand's engineering in Brazil is unique and patented, with a better use of the chassis to support electrical technology in an innovative way.

It's a new concept for electric truck. In this configuration in modules, the front part accommodates the cabin and auxiliaries. Between the axes are the batteries, working this distance to maximize the energy storage area. Finally, there is the powertrain: it is a truck with an electric traction motor positioned at the rear of the vehicle, a novelty in the market. This entire architecture overcomes the challenge of providing energy capacity tailored to the customers' application, with robustness and reliability

Strength to face any challenge

With over 96% energy efficiency, the e-Delivery's traction motor impresses with its power and strength. The vehicle delivers its maximum torque at low revs. It offers up to 300 kW of power and does not require the use of a transmission due to its high torque immediately transmitted to the traction axle. Depending on its configuration, the VW electric truck can depart on ramps of up to 28% without any difficulty. The same force you have to accelerate is reflected in the regeneration braking.

This performance is the result of a thorough calibration for severe operations. Its torque and power curves are unique and unprecedented, capable of meeting a wide range of applications. It is an alternating current permanent magnet synchronous motor. Its design is unique, made to be light and operate within the flexible modular architecture of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus.

The vehicle also comprises a traction inverter, which acts as the brain of the engine, receiving commands on how the engine should act. It is the power and torque meter.

Leftover energy in real operations

With a choice of six or three battery packs, e-Delivery’s intelligent engineering translates to a range of up to 250 km, depending on vehicle configuration and application. Its three-stage regenerative brake can use up to 40% of the energy spent to decelerate. This solution was built in line with real conditions of urban operations.

Behind this energy are lithium-ion batteries that are optimized in design so that the sets are lighter while offering one of the best energy densities on the market. In addition, they are free of nickel, cobalt and manganese, making them the most sustainable option.

They are water-cooled, with temperature control to extend their service life and can also be heated if necessary. All this in a completely safe way. The e-Delivery operates at a nominal voltage of 650 volts. All vehicle components are designed to operate efficiently, being activated only when necessary.

e-Delivery supports DC charging in up to 150 kW of power, well above most options available on the market, which significantly reduces vehicle downtime at charging stations and increases user availability. For the operation, the outlet standard is international, the CCS-2, followed also by the European market and by most electric vehicle manufacturers.

To make the customer experience the best possible, VWCO and its partners will provide true consultancy when it comes to electrification infrastructure, which will range from the specification of chargers tested and approved by the assembler to integration with renewable energy sources, which may make the customer’s fleet 100% powered by clean energy.

Comfort and operational safety

The e-Delivery is equipped with pneumatic suspension for greater comfort and operational safety. The suspension development is completely new, specifically designed for your application. It has four pockets in the traction axle. The 14-tonne model adds two on the auxiliary, which the driver can also suspend when the implement is empty, reducing tire wear and rolling resistance, making the vehicle even more efficient.

The suspension comes with an electronic management system that controls its entire operation and allows for a series of intelligent solutions. There is a reading of load per axle, which makes it easier for the operator to make the correct load distribution. It also adjusts the height from keys on the panel, facilitating implement loading operations. When climbing steep slopes, the operator has the option of raising the load on the drive axle, increasing the grip with the ground and preventing the vehicle tires from slipping during the climb.

This efficient management also dynamically monitors the height of the pockets, and activates the air system only when necessary, which helps to reduce air consumption and consequently energy.

The main focus of the development of this project was to optimize the weight and reliability of each component, with intense work on virtual simulations and structural calculation. This also involved the development of a robust chassis for this type of application, as well as the new patented concept for modular installation of the batteries in the vehicle, reducing as much as possible the efforts in the set. All to support the additional weight of the batteries while maintaining the vehicles’ payload capacity.

The new VW e-Delivery has around 100 sensors and new electronic controls to make the vehicle even more efficient. The novelty carries with it state-of-the-art technology with the most refined on-board intelligence systems. Solutions range from regenerating braking energy to more effective controls for the air conditioning. Whether automatically or by choice of the driver, e-Delivery always operates at its maximum efficiency.

One of the vehicle’s greatest assets is its engine regeneration system, capable of recovering more than 40% of the energy during braking, which will be used to recharge the batteries. The regenerative brake assists the service brake, in order to provide maximum vehicle deceleration and less wear on the components, which greatly reduces maintenance costs and increases the vehicle’s availability in operation. From a key on the panel, the driver can choose between three stages, varying the intensity of action of the system.

Another differential is the Eco-Drive Mode, activated by the driver when he needs to save battery power. With this command, the vehicle automatically adjusts its performance in operation, delivering only what is necessary and increasing its autonomy.

The vehicle’s intelligence goes even further: the e-Delivery comes equipped as standard with an inclinometer, a tilt sensor that analyzes the topographical condition and sends the message to the engine, all automatically. Combined with a hill start assist (HSA) system, it becomes a driver’s dream. The truck has enough strength and power to go up slopes of up to 28% without difficulty.

Highly efficient steering and brakes

The item security also adds the most modern. e-Delivery customers benefit from automatic traction control (known as ATC). Electronic sensors constantly monitor the vehicle’s trajectory and indicate any potential reduction in tire grip on the ground to automatically activate wheel brakes and adjust engine torque until friction and motion control is regained. The vehicle also has an ABS sensor on the auxiliary axle with a pressure modulating valve for better braking distribution.

In the batteries, in addition to managing the entire performance and energy flow, there is a specific thermal control, developed exclusively for e-Delivery, based on applications in emerging countries, which translates into a robust water cooling system with control temperature to prolong its service life. It also has a heating system for countries with lower temperatures. All according to the identified need and in a completely safe way.

The system monitors the battery temperature in real time to deliver maximum performance. It has different stages according to the vehicle’s operating condition. Electronic sensors monitor and react instantly to pressure, water and ambient temperature.

The entire vehicle is programmed to work efficiently, which results in lower energy consumption and better operating costs. In other words, your systems operate at maximum efficiency and don’t act without the need. There are even electronic controls for the brake compressor and air conditioning systems, which operate according to the demand of the vehicle, as requested by the driver.

In-cab comfort is also managed by intelligent systems. The air conditioning and heating systems are independent and with optimized performance. Care comes down to detail: new silencers were installed on all brake valves to reduce noise.

Electric, connected, intelligent and bespoke: the e-Delivery is also already prepared for high and low voltage electrical power outlets (ePTO).

Full proof security

e-Delivery has been tested in the most extreme situations and its development contemplates solutions for any concerns that you may have during its operation. Each component is continuously and uninterruptedly monitored through the RIO telemetry system, including information on the flow of energy from the batteries.

During recharging sessions, the e-Delivery keeps the plug locked with the charger to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the system. In the event of any anomaly, the flow is automatically interrupted and the cause of the problem can be identified via the vehicle’s on-board computer. The vehicle can be recharged in any weather condition. Come rain or shine, there is no danger for the user to operate this electric truck.

The battery composition is the safest on the market, more stable and with greater resistance to higher temperatures. Its construction also ensures protection from water. It is extremely safe, has been severely tested and approved.

Like any electric vehicle, the high voltage cables are identified in orange color and have reinforced shielding. In e-Delivery, there are about 50 meters of this cable with a very specific script to minimize risks. Quick-connect connections make it easy to change any component safely. These connections and energized components are not easily accessible to the end user, for the purpose of application safety.

A great differential of the e-Delivery is in its steering system, with extra safety ensured with the adoption of a double hydraulic pump, which operates in redundancy and guarantees normal driving even in the event of a failure of one of the equipment.

And the attention is already in the future as well: for those countries where legislation requires it, the e-Delivery is already equipped with a system to emit a sound similar to that of a diesel truck, with the function of alerting people close to the vehicle’s presence. It can be turned off in noise-restricted regions such as hospital areas.

If necessary, a VWCO technician is able to monitor this vehicle remotely in order to identify any anomaly that is affecting the proper functioning of the vehicle. As with the entire VWCO line, every detail is tailored to offer the customer the cleanest and most efficient transport solution.

Modern cabin: with everything at hand and in sight

The e-Delivery brings all the advantages of the Delivery cabin, the most modern in the market, and adds facilities for the operation of an electric vehicle. The starting functions, for example, are very similar to the diesel version, all to minimize the difference in driving for the user.

The driver will be on board the cabin with the best interior space in its category, while, in a simple and agile way, it will visualize all the information necessary to drive the VW electric truck. On the cluster, he finds a customized look, with autonomy data, instantaneous consumption, available vehicle power and indicator of regeneration levels with selector switch, among others.

Car driving and comfort with truck robustness: this is the Delivery family secret, whether in its electric or diesel version. When entering the truck, the driver already feels that the model is tailormade, with a steering wheel with multiple adjustments and a smaller diameter. The steering column has height and depth adjustment, which provides passenger car ergonomics. Its rear air suspension also complements the driver’s comfort package.

Maneuverability is another advantage thanks to its excellent turning radius, which facilitates day-to-day driving and makes a difference in operations in cities with narrow lanes. By the way, the e-Delivery meets all the Brazilian legal requirements for an urban cargo vehicle in its version with a 3,300 mm wheelbase and can travel without restriction. VW Caminhões e Ônibus became the first industrial complex to manufacture large-scale electric vehicles in Brazil, having built a new area dedicated exclusively to electrification. The brand's global research and development center will also house the largest infrastructure of high-powered chargers in Brazil, with different models, to support all this innovation.

Heart of electrical assembly, the e-Shop is VWCO's new space where vehicles receive batteries and are energized for the first time to be started, meeting all the strictest safety protocols. Before getting there, the e-Delivery models are born on the same assembly line as diesel vehicles for maximum efficiency of the manufacturing unit and benefiting from the high standard of quality already established in the VWCO process and which is recognized in the market.

Modernizations throughout all workstations guarantee cutting-edge technology to their manufacturing, with superior precision and traceability in the processes. Each step was re-thought for greater productivity: in engine pre-assembly, for example, auxiliary systems are now consolidated. Also for the first time, the air suspension is installed at the factory. At the end of all assemblies, VW Caminhões e Ônibus submits the vehicle to new specific approvals for high voltage trucks, in addition to the same quality tests that all other products already undergo before being released to the customer with the guarantee of the Volkswagen standard.

Throughout the entire development, simultaneous engineering dominated the process for planning of manufacturing and logistics to this degree of synergy. This enabled the insertion of electrical technology into VWCO's portfolio and an addition of just one thousand square meters to its constructed area.

The manufacture of e-Delivery also benefits from all gains of industry 4.0 added by VW Caminhões e Ônibus in its process since the launch of the new Delivery line, which has a 60% automation level in the cabin framing. CATL and Moura: supply, management, distribution, maintenance and final disposal of batteries

Together, CATL and Baterias Moura supply the lithium-ion battery systems and their components, but responsibility goes far beyond that. Moura and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus are working together on the proper final disposal and recycling of the batteries, following the best market practices with a focus on environmental sustainability.

The entire process will start with the collection of the battery at the dealerships and, after a technical evaluation, it will go through a preparation process to proceed to proper disposal and recycling.

CATL, the largest manufacturer and leader in the development of lithium ion batteries in the world, sends the components to the Baterias Moura unit in Belo Jardim (PE), where the company has invested in a new pre-assembly area specifically for the system of lithium ion batteries. In addition, Baterias Moura has a space for the consolidation of the package at VWCO’s factory in Resende.

Siemens and ABB: infrastructure and chargers

In the e-Consórcio, Siemens and ABB will be responsible for providing the charging infrastructure at the customer. The companies have a complete portfolio of charging solutions and services that range from different stations with high energy capacity to intelligent and diversified solutions for refueling several vehicles in the same location.

The high power loaders are capable of feeding trucks from 24 to 150 kW depending on their configuration. They can even recharge multiple vehicles simultaneously. For the best choice, they will work together with VWCO in customer orientation.

GDSolar: clean energy supply

With 61 photovoltaic power generation plants installed in 14 Brazilian states, GDSolar is the new partner of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus in the e-Consórcio to support customers with the supply of solar energy from a 100% renewable source.

The company arrives to complete the viability of the vehicle recharge chain, providing a complete solution for sustainable energy, solar energy generation, electricity grid, installations for customers and dealers and the vehicle charger.

WEG, Bosch and Meritor: components

WEG is a Brazilian multinational and in the e-Consórcio it is responsible for supplying the motor and traction inverter set. For e-Delivery, the company, together with VWCO Engineering, developed a customized solution for the application, work that ranged from defining the dimensional of the set, complying with standards, torque and power curves, in addition to developing a new software for controlling the frequency inverter meeting the most demanding automotive requirements.

The component supplied by Bosch is the vehicle control unit with a new technology with high processing power, being the vehicle’s brain and being responsible for the mobility functions in the electro-electronic architecture. In addition, the company provides embedded software solutions for vehicle electrification.

With a cross-functional team involving engineers from different countries such as Brazil, Germany, India, Austria and Vietnam, the company also nationalized the production of the vehicle’s control unit, helping the project not only with local content, but also with an agile and complete service for the customer.

In addition to already being a partner of the Modular Consortium, Meritor makes one more contribution: the supply of a new ECO - Electric Compatible shaft class developed for the application. Throughout the process, the company dedicated a team of engineers to support the tests and validations, ensuring its standard of quality and reliability.

 

Semcon: provision of engineering services

Semcon has the role of engineering services provider in the e-Consórcio, acting in the areas of prototype assembly, tooling, in addition to supporting product engineering and testing. In all, Semcon dedicated around 50 professionals involved in the activities and with diversified experience and training, such as mechanics, tool makers, analysts, product and test engineers, ensuring compliance with the project schedule.

Eletra: strategic partnership

Eletra, a Brazilian company that is a national and international reference in sustainable public transport, is a strategic partner in the e-Consórcio and, together with VW Caminhões e Ônibus, seeks new solutions for electromobility. Digital resources bypass Covid-19 pandemic restrictions

For the start of series production of the e-Delivery electric truck, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus invested in several rounds of safety training and general knowledge to qualify all those working on the electric assembly line, regional sales offices throughout Brazil and also its dealership network. There will be eight thousand people accessing materials at VWCO’s authorized stores, which will be added to the more than three thousand already trained at the assembler’s facilities.

The project brought to the assembler several new components not yet known by most employees, such as lithium batteries and high voltage cables. Valuing internal security, a specialized team of VWCO employees from the Engineering, Quality, After-Sales, Training and Human Resources areas was created to prepare the full range of training for this new vehicle.

In all, for the internal public, four levels of qualification were made available, from general knowledge about the product, which has already been carried out by around three thousand company employees. The training ranges from more specific content, aimed at those directly involved in the assembly of the electric truck, to general aspects that should be known by everyone.

The priority was to maintain the internal safety of everyone involved during the production of electric vehicles and not expose employees to the risk of serious accidents, due to the high voltage of cables and batteries. A cultural change directly linked to the treatment and development of the product was necessary. Therefore, it was necessary for all employees, from production to management, to carry out the training.

Safety

The qualification project highlights points of attention for everyone, from battery assembly to the moment the vehicle is electrified, known as commissioning the high voltage vehicle, when the electric vehicle is energized for the first time, requiring specific procedures to deal with voltages greater than 600V.

It is an immersion in the specific demands of electric propulsion, to teach employees how to recognize and deal with the safety processes of this new product, in accordance with the most rigorous tests and certification necessary for a historic launch like this one.

In addition to internal training, the assembler prepared a complete material to be made available to more than eight thousand people who will have contact with the product through the network of authorized dealers. As it is an innovative product, the assembler was concerned with translating all the technology and technical knowledge of the engineers and transforming this content into training with language and didactics accessible to everyone.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many training courses have already been created in digital format. Others received adaptations for access through the online training platform, enabling the VWCO network in an agile, safe and modern way.

Community

VWCO has also conducted several workshops on e-Delivery for public agencies in Brazil, such as the São Paulo State Military Fire Department, the Rio de Janeiro State Military Fire Department and the relevant public security entities in the municipalities of Resende, Porto Real and Itatiaia (RJ).

Theoretical training, conducted by VWCO’s e-Mobility team, addressed notions about the truck’s electrical characteristics, with the aim of enabling professionals from these institutions to safely deal with possible accidents involving the vehicle.
